2016 and the coming year are going to be very important for global automobile industry with several new contenders appearing in crossover SUV segment. Cadillac is gearing up for launching the 2017 XT5. The compact luxury crossover is a very important vehicle for the company which wants to grab a pie of the luxury crossover segment. The second-generation Cadillac SRX still holds the ground but a successor can give the company some competitive edge. The 2017 XT5 is set for launch soon. It is available in 4 trims- Base, Premium Luxury, Luxury and Platinum models.
2017 Cadillac XT5 – Out and In Design with Changes
The exterior of the new 2017 Cadillac XT5 offers a blend of sharp creases and curves. The newer chassis ensures the vehicle is lighter compared to its predecessor. The glass side windows are bigger which enhances visibility. GM says the 2017 Cadillac XT5 is about 300 kgs lighter than rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350. This is impressive considering the fact Cadillac has used high-strength steel in the body of XT5, leaving aluminum for interior trim and engine area. Overall, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 is a little larger than most compact crossovers. The width and length resembles that of a midsized sedan. The downside is its standard panoramic moonroof takes a toll on headroom and taller passengers may not like it.
For the cabin of 2017 XT5, Cadillac has clearly taken some design cues from its German rival BMW. Just like the BMW models, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 has reduced sized buttons and knobs on its dashboard. However, there is no denying the lavishness in materials used in the cabin of 2017 XT5. The legroom at rear seats is generous. The rear seat has 40-20-40 split option. The front seats are pretty comfortable. The 2017 Cadillac XT5 is a 5 seater crossover SUV and no third row means you get plenty of cargo space. The cut-and-sewn leather contrasts nicely with carbon fiber and wood. Its new e-shifter offers option for storing small items like purse and cameras etc.
When it comes to specs, safety and entertainment technology the 2017 Cadillac XT5 scores very well and outshines many category rivals. Of special importance is the Rear Camera Mirror system. It makes use of a video display rather than a typical rearview mirror. As a result, you get to see wider and crisper images. However, this Rear Camera Mirror makes cars at the back appear closer. The backup camera shows space around the car more accurately. The Cadillac User Experience interface somewhat resembles the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system. The navigation offered by the CUE is quite impressive. However, online destination search is something you may miss given there is a 4G/LTE data modem. You also get Digital music, Bluetooth phone system and radio as a part of CUE. On top of it, you get support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
As it is, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 is yet to be tested by US safety agencies. However, safety should not be its downside given the new body structure made with high-strength steel. The number of active safety features in the SUV will put a smile on your face. However, the base model does miss a bit on that side. The active safety features are split into two groups- driver assist and driver awareness. The driver awareness package has forward collision alert, front pedestrian detection, lane keep assist along with automatic emergency braking. You have to shell out $2,340 for the driver assist package. It comprises of adaptive cruise control, automatic collision braking along with advanced park assist.
2017 Cadillac XT5 – Modifications in the Engine
The 2017 Cadillac XT5 is powered by a mighty 3.6 liters V6 engine which generates a whopping 310 hp. The car is a developed on front-wheel-drive platform. However, AWD is offered as an option. There are various driving modes including Sport and touring. The latter is meant for enhanced fuel efficiency. The engine, coupled with a powerful eight-speed automatic transmission offers decent performance on all terrains. The ZF CDC suspension, available in selected trims helps the 2017 Cadillac XT5 cater to varying road conditions quickly.
2017 Cadillac XT5 – Pricing and Availability
The entry level trim of 2017 XT5 starts under $40000 and that may attract a good number of potential buyers. The top end Platinum trim XT5 costs as much as over $60,000. It will start selling by middle of 2016 in various markets. The Cadillac 2017 XT5 looks a worthy successor to the SRX model that has been a good contender. It handles various types of roads pretty well.
The engine may not be the most powerful in its segment but it is no slouch either! It will face some strong competition from rivals like the Lexus RX 350 nevertheless. It could fare a tad better if it was equipped with GM’s Magnetic Ride Control system. Overall, there is little reason not to select this new luxury compact crossover.
