The compact SUV has become one of the most hotly contested markets for motor manufacturers worldwide. Combining practicality for family motoring with performance and fuel efficiency. Slightly bigger than its smaller brother, the CX-5, the CX-9 is obviously roomier, with a 3-row seating configuration. The 2018 Mazda CX-9 has undergone some stylish design changes, parking a little after the Infiniti XQ60. The new model has an all-around high-end luxury look and feel. The most notable difference will come from an all-new engine, which is much lighter and fuel efficient than the previous model. The new engine makes the 2018 Mazda CX-9 an extremely economical option, particularly for urban commuting.
2018 Mazda CX-9 – Exterior Body Changes and Interior Cabin Design
The 2018 Mazda CX-9 comes out tops in the exterior styling department. Plenty of chrome detailing accent the grille and bumper lines. The chrome detail continues along the roofline, door sills and around the side windows. Also, the narrow slanting LED headlights giving it the look of a much lighter sporting sedan.
The rear is also graced with elegant LED tail lights that taper into the trunk lid, with a hint of chrome accenting the bottom of the rear bumper and a molded spoiler above the rear windscreen. The exterior look is completed by a set of 20 inches spoke alloy wheels, giving the final touch to a very sporty look.
The interior of the 2018 CX-9 speaks of quality and luxury. High-quality plastics are trained to give a leather-like feel. The instrument cluster uses consonant analog dials, one of the cycle housings includes an LCD screen which displays information to the driver like route navigation, a compass or tour information. You’ll find all the mod cons you’d expect from a modern car. Also, it includes a 7 inch LCD screen which folds into the dashboard, plenty of airbags, auto-dimming rear view mirror, collision warning and plenty more. Features will vary depending on which of the 4 trim options are chosen. The second row of seats provides ample legroom for adults, provided the bench is pushed to the full back position.
2018 Mazda CX-9 – Engine and Performance
Departing from the old model’s V6 engine, the 2018 Mazda CX-9 comes with an all-new turbocharged four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine. The new engine delivers 250 hp on premium energy and 227 hp on normal. There is plenty of low-end torque, 310-pound feet from 2000 RPM, making it great for quick acceleration at low speeds. Also, turbo lag has been reduced by what Mazda calls the Dynamic Pressure Turbo system, which is a configuration of valves which direct exhaust gasses to keep adequate pressure for the turbo.
As with the previous model the Mazda CX-9 2018 comes with the option of front wheel drive or all wheel drive using Mazda’s “i-Active-AWD” system. The smaller engine is obviously more fuel efficient than the previous one, further improved by a weight reduction of 132 pounds compared to the old V6. Mazda claims the overall weight reduction of the vehicle to be 269 pounds for the front wheel drive and 258 pounds for the four-wheel drive. The new engine and weight loss translates to fuel consumption of 21/27 mpg for the AWD (compared to 16/22 for the old model) and 22/28 MPG for the FWD (compared to 17/24 for the old model).
