It is not every day that you hear a yesteryear’s iconic carmaker is making a return after a hiatus of 54 years. Borgward announced of its return at the Geneva Motor Show and the German carmaker has exciting plans in its sleeves. It is all set to mark its return with a stylish SUV called BX7. A car maker that is remembered for making some trucks in the past wants to make comeback with a contender in a popular segment. The near production version showcased at 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show drew enough attention.
Borgward BX7 SUV – Body Styles Changes and other Options
The Borgward BX7 is a big SUV and it is almost as big as the Audi Q5. The exterior resembles German crossover models. The BX7 does have sharper lines than the Audi one though. The standard grille resembles that of Buick’s waterfall design. The massive grille is matched well by aggressive front bumper and fog lamps. At the rear side, there is a muscular bumper along with 2 exhaust pipes. You can also opt for the Touring Sports version in lieu of the standard model. The additions include roof spoiler, beefier side skirts, wider front intakes and diamond pattern front grille.
The cabin of Borgward BX7 SUV is quite classy and premium looking. The leather-wrapped seats, aluminum trim and contrast stitching all reflect attention to details. There is a 12.3-inch infotainment system in-built in its cabin. It has WiFi hot-spot function and supports both iOS and Android devices. You can configure the vehicle with 5 to 7 seats- a rare feature in this segment. The SUV will not skimp on safety features. It offers airbags for front row of seats while rear row passengers get protection of curtain side airbags. The body is made with crash zones. You also get fancy features like an air purification setup and 360 degrees panoramic camera. Features like dual-zone automatic air conditioning and hill descent control have also been included.
Borgward BX7 SUV – Engine Options
The Borgward BX7 SUV is powered by a mighty 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that generates 221 horsepower. You get seven-speed dual-clutch or six-speed automatic transmissions mated to an AWD setup. Top speed is capped at 124 mph and it can reach 0 to 60 mph within 10 seconds. In future, a hybrid version will also be released.
Borgward BX7 SUV – Pricing and Availability
The pricing details of the Borgward BX7 SUV are yet to be announced officially. Since the brand is not much popular in Europe and other markets, the pricing is likely to be lower than popular German rivals. The starting price could be around 40.000 USD. It will be released first in Chinese and adjacent markets. In European markets it may make foray in 2017. The Borgward BX7 SUV looks like an interesting offering from a lesser known contender in the highly competitive SUV segment. It will face steep competition from Luxury SUV crossovers like the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and the venerable Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. The rivals are faster and come equipped with fancier features. However, with right marketing, the model can make a strong impact more so in the emerging markets.
