Kia has generally been known as a budget carmaker but the future prospects seem to be different. The Kia Telluride Concept showcased at the recent 2016 Detroit Auto Show by Kia hogged enough headlines. The model reflects the company’s vision for a luxury SUV that is designed to lock horns with heavyweight rivals from premium car brands. It seems like sister brand Hyundai Motors, Kia is keen on reaching out to a wider range of buyers.
Kia Telluride Concept – Fresh New Look Promised
The Kia Telluride Concept is a large-sized three-row SUV which looks classy and offers serious competition to category rivals. The Kia Telluride Concept has a decidedly muscular and boxy look and the tiger-nose grill looks somewhat aggressive. The luxuriance of rival SUV and crossovers is not there. The doors open 90 degrees in reverse directions, giving you a view of its interior space. The design is based on the popular Sorento crossover from Kia’s stable but Telluride concept does look futuristic. It is bigger, taller and wider than the Sorento crossover. The front view is reminiscent of old American pickup trucks to an extent, a kind of retro revival!
The interior of the Telluride concept is rather lavish and it is attention to small details that stands out. The captain’s seats in front row are made of plush black leather. There are sensors to get health stats of passengers. Under the sunroof there is a LED panel that emits therapeutic lighting which is handy to treat jet lags.
Kia Telluride Concept – Engine Options
Kia has not provided ample information on engine options for the Telluride concept. However, the crossover will have an AWD powertrain. It will be coupled with mighty 6-cylinder 3.5-liter gasoline engine. The 270 horsepower engine is paired with a 130 HP electric motor. The hybrid power train can achieve 30 MPG in highway driving, says Kia. The Kia Telluride is a geek’s dream on wheels coming true. There are fancy specs thrown in everywhere. While it remains to be seen how much of these will be used in real life scenario, it is cool to have a bit of avant-garde technology in your car! You get Wireless cell phone charging in center stack of the cabin. The Swipe Command technology is another attraction which lets rear-seat passengers touch and choose media. The premium Harman Kardon audio setup takes care of media playback.
Kia Telluride Concept – Price and Availability
Since the Telluride is a concept vehicle it remains uncertain as to when it will hit production and what the pricing will be like. Since the Kia Sorento starts at $40,000, it can be assumed the up class sibling will have a steeper price tag. The base price can be close to $45000 or so. There is no denying the Kia Telluride Concept is an interesting offering from a not so premium carmaker that looks absolutely stylish and classy. It has some cool technologies included and the engine specs are also impressive. With right pricing and marketing, it has the potential to be a game changer in the competitive SUV segment.
