The Mazda has been busy revamping its automobile lineup in recent years. The company is particular about bringing out a new range of vehicles inspired by the KODO design language. The new lineup is also equipped with much touted SkyActiv fuel-efficient engines. The CX-9 has not been changed much in recent years and the CX-7 was taken out of the market in 2012. Auto industry experts, however, are pretty upbeat about the Mazda Koeru Concept. The concept vehicle showcased at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show generated a lot of buzzes. It does feature top-notch safety features, MZD Connect, and SKYACTIV Technology. This is the latest effort from the Japanese carmaker to grab a large pie of the emerging crossover SUV segment.
Mazda Koeru Concept – Exterior Expectations and Luxurious Interior Design
The Mazda Koeru Concept vehicle has a formidable presence no matter which way you look at it. The Led lights and big grille give it somewhat menacing look. The word Koeru in Japanese means ‘go beyond’. Mazda says the NVH technology used in the concept car will be handy in reducing vibration and noise in the cabin. The company is tight-lipped about the final production version this concept model will give way to. However, the Koeru looks very much like a midsized crossover SUV. There are design cues taken from the company’s CX-5 and CX-3 crossovers. The front bumper here, however, is more aggressive and headlamps are slender. Even the rear lights are slimmer. There are larger exhaust outlets. The wheels also appear to be rather large. The Mazda Koeru Concept is smaller than the CX 9 but larger than the CX-5. Some industry experts indicate the final version may be called CX-4.
Not much is known about the details about the cabin of the Mazda Koeru Concept. However, in sync with existing Mazda car, the cabin is likely to have sleek and classy looks. The instrument cluster, steering wheels are likely to be same as seen in existing Mazda models. The seats will be wrapped by quality bright colored leather. It is the cargo space where the Koeru may fall short of some rivals. The rear seat space may also be a tad less for the taller passengers owing to its sloping roof design. As far as safety and entertainment options are concerned, the Mazda Koeru Concept is likely to come with all the bells and whistles you can think of. The much touted NVH technology is there to make riding quieter and smoother. The i-ACTIVSENSE safety tech has been used which includes headlights that adjust to driving. You also get features like lane departure detection and intelligent cruise control. Apart from that entertainment options to connect smartphones and enjoy music would be there.
Mazda Koeru Concept – Modifications in the Engine
The Mazda Koeru Concept may have the same engine used in the CX-5. So, there is likely to be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder inside the base model. It generates 155 hp. Higher trims will get an 184 hp 2.5-liter engine. The options of a six-speed automatic or manual gearbox will be there. Another 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine may be available in select markets. The engines are expected to be really fuel efficient.
Mazda Koeru Concept – Expected MSRP and Availability
It is unclear as to when the final production version of the Koeru Concept will hit the road. However, the prototype was spotted testing under camouflage in China this year. This indicates the car actually may hit the showrooms by the end of 2016. The pricing is not revealed but experts guess it should not be above $30000 mark for the base version. The Mazda wants to lock horns with the stupendously successful Subaru Outback, a model that has retained its position amidst steep competition over the years. Few imitators of the Outback tasted success, as it is. The Ford Freestyle/Taurus X faded out and same happened to the Audi A4 Avant and Toyota Venza. Only the XC70 of Volvo came close to the Outback. Masamichi Kogai, the CEO of the Mazda says the car will give more driving pleasure. The Mazda Koeru Concept seems to have got most things right. With aggressive styling, spacious cabin and a tried and tested drive train- it ticks the boxes. It remains to be seen how the final version performs and whether it manages to dethrone the rival.
