Unlike the US-based rivals, Volkswagen does not really have a lot of premium SUV models in its portfolio nowadays. The iconic German carmaker which is a leader in many markets across the world, is working to bring out a compact SUV based on the popular Golf platform. The SUV is likely to hit production by 2017, say the industry insiders. It is aimed at the nascent crossover market. It will be manufactured in two wheelbase sizes. It will be positioned a tad below the successful Tiguan.
VW Golf SUV – Design and Modeling
The upcoming SUV based on VW Golf SUV platform is an extension of the T Roc Concept showcased in Geneva Motor Show of 2014. The 5 door SUV looks absolutely stylish and the stamp of VM design pedigree is evident. The roof rails and underbody protection gives it an edge over category rivals. It is likely to be equipped with all-season tyres and raised suspension. The cabin is likely to have really high quality materials. The new headlights are likely to be powered by LED technology. Small touches of refinements will be there all round, both in interior and exterior of the Volkswagen Golf SUV. Even the tail lights will also be revamped. The engineers at VW have been trying to use lighter materials so at the overall body weight of the car gets reduced to an extent. The same thing was done when the company revamped the existing Passat sedan. Despite the compact from factor it can accommodate 7 people inside.
VW Golf SUV – Under the hood
It is expected that the VW Golf will have an 4Motion AWD system. The model may be powered by the tried and tested 2.0-liter TDI engine. There can be a 1.8-liter TSI version as well. However, a hybrid version adapted from Golf GTE may also be unveiled later. The engine may be equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission. The estimated top speed of the VW Golf SUV will be 155 Mph based on this power train. Details on the features in the upcoming SUV are unclear. However, it may be equipped with shock absorber adjustment, hill descent control and a large fuel tank. There will be all standard VW SUV safety and driver assistance system you can think of!
VW Golf SUV – Pricing and Availability
VW is tight-lipped about pricing of the upcoming Golf based compact SUV. However, the entry-level model may have a price tag of 25,000 Euros. The VW Golf SUV will be unveiled along with the much touted MkVIII Golf. It will lock horns with contenders like the Mazda CX-3 crossover and Nissan Juke. However, once the model arrives in market, the VW Tiguan will be slotted for an up market move. The timing could either be late 2017 or early 2018.
